PLANET OF THE CHICKEN
With around 30 billion individuals, the chicken is the most frequent terrestrial vertebrate on our planet. Earth may be the planet of the chicken, but it is also its prison. Usually confined in small spaces, separated from the outer world, these birds live short, miserable lives. As omnivores, chicken have a similar diet to our own and compete with us for food and agricultural land. Together with other livestock, the growing number of chickens is the most important global driver for agricultural expansion, deforestation, land use change, and biodiversity loss. Through the body of the chicken, we are consuming Earth, our shared home.
